CSA MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION
What is a CSA?
CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture
A CSA is a local, farm-based distribution system for organic produce – it’s all about increasing community access to high-quality, locally grown produce. And it’s about strengthening the connection between eaters and farmers. It has been around for decades and is slightly different from a vegetable box program from non farmers.
When you become a CSA member, you sign up and pre-pay for a set number of weeks of produce from our farm. Each week, we pack up shares of freshly harvested produce and distribute it to our members. You are getting fresh and local food, and the best our farm has to offer.
Your commitment to us allows us to plan carefully for the upcoming season and supports us financially to pay for things like seed, tools and wages in the early season without the farm heading into debt. Which is why we ask for payment up front.
Please read our CSA policy below to decide whether it is the right fit for you to join. If you have any questions, we’d love to chat with you. Drop us a line at: email@example.com
As a member you will receive:
- A box of certified organic, freshly harvested local veggies (generally 7 items) once per week for the duration of the program.
- The best our farm has to offer. We give priority to our CSA customers and pick the best for you.
- Summer abundance bonuses. When we have extra, you get extra!
- Our gratitude. Knowing we can safely make early-season purchases like seeds and soil amendments, and plan our season with you on our team, makes a big difference to the risks we can take.
Summer 2022 Start date: Wednesday, June 8 and runs for 16 weeks until late September.
Are you interested in becoming a member of our CSA program?
Please read carefully through this page before you decide to join us so you are fully informed about the CSA program. Registration will remain open until we sell out. We encourage you to sign up as soon as you can, as shares sell fast!
Weekly share contents
Our goal is to offer 5-7 different veggies each week, totaling an average value of $30. In general we try to include a bag of salad greens, a bunch of cooking greens, a bunch of root veggies, a bunch of herbs and round it out with a diversity of other seasonal veggies. We will occasionally bring in produce from other local organic growers to increase weekly variety.
Value or variety lost in one week (due to crop failures, weather, or pest issues) will be made up in future weeks.
You will recieve a weekly newsletter with information on what is coming in your box and some recipe suggestions from our farmers and chef friends
Grocery Planning List
Along with recipes and stories from the field, you will receive a list of anticipated box contents a few days before your box pick-up day. This will help you plan your grocery shopping for the week. Sometimes we have to make last-minute changes on harvest days, but you can count on receiving most of the items listed in your newsletter.
For each new person you refer who signs up for our CSA program, you will receive a $10 market credit which can be used at the Whitaker Farm stand at the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market! A new member is someone who has never been in our CSA program before. To receive your credits the person you refer MUST provide us with your contact information on their sign-up form. You do not have to be a CSA member to take advantage of our referral program, so if you love what we do but can’t commit for this year you’ll get a little bonus from us for promoting our program.
Your recommendation is the highest compliment we could receive as we strive to ensure you get the freshest, highest quality organic produce we can provide.
Whitaker Farm CSA Policy
The value of shares will average out at $30 worth of produce per week. Because CSA members share in the risks and benefits of farming, value lost in one week’s share will be made up in future weeks. Shares delivered to our off-farm pick-up locations include a fuel surcharge for the season to help us get your vegetables to a convenient location.
There are three ways to pay. You can send us an e-transfer, or pay by credit card. We also accept cash but please email us to set up a meeting.
On Farm Pick Up
Shares are picked up once a week by members at Whitaker Farm. If you miss your pick up due to unforeseen circumstances, don’t worry, we’ll hold onto it for you for two days after your missed pick-up day. After that we will donate it to Lush Valley who will ensure that food goes to folks who might not otherwise have access to fresh, organic produce.
Shares are delivered to your home. This is a contactless delivery. We ask you get your produce into a fridge within an hour of delivery for optimum freshness. We work with you to determine best location to drop off your produce. Once it is delivered we are no longer responsible for its freshness.
We ask that CSA members commit to reading email and newsletter messages from us. It’s important that we have an efficient way of getting in touch if there are any changes to your pick-up location or time. It’s also important to us that you know a bit about what’s happening at our farms every week. It’s good to stay connected!
If you are going on vacation, please drop us a line to let us know when you will be away at firstname.lastname@example.org We can provide you with farm stand or market credit for a missed week as long as we are informed at least one week in advance. Please note, this credit must be redeemed at the farmers’ market within the calendar year.
All shares include a non-refundable deposit of $30. If you are unhappy with the CSA program and wish for a refund, we will reimburse you for the remaining weeks of shares minus the non-refundable deposit.
